Q: What knowledge is needed to find herps successfully?
a: Typically all you really need to go field herping is some knowledge of the species you are looking for. If you are looking for a wide variety of reptiles than you simply need to know how to pick out a good location. If you want to increase your odds at finding reptiles it also helps to know where and how to look for them. All of the popular techniqes and most productive methods are listed in detail in the Field Herping Guide.

Q: Are any specific tools or gear recommended?
a: We normally recommend preparing properly for the situation you will be faced with. If you are herping during the day for example in the hot sunlight you probably wont want to wear a long pair of heavy pants. If you are trekking through an area with damp marshy areas you will probably want to be wearing a pair of hip or chest waders. In most cases we recommend carrying a small backpack with you that can hold various supplies such as a snake hook, a camera, some water, and bug repellent.

Q: What is the best method to find snakes and other reptiles?
a: This depends heavily on your location, the habitat you will be searching in, and the species you will be looking for. If you have had a long hard day and have not found any snakes you will probably be best switching to another method such as flipping or road cruising at night.

Q: Are Reptiles found in the wild suitable for captive care?
a: Whenever possible we recommend leaving all animals found back in their natural habitat for various reasons. Its always best to purchase captive bred reptiles not only because they are more docile in nature but also because they are normally in better health and are used to feeding on thawed out food etc. Reptiles found in the wild can be kept in captivity under certain circumstances, just make sure it is legal to do so in your area.
